Description | this is a monument in honor of gloomp's birthday, hooray!
i took time off of Vehemence to make this for him <3 |
This map was featured on 2010-06-03
High above the world, there stands a mighty cliff. Atop this mighty cliff stands a statue, a thousand feet high. A monument to a man, nay, a god. He surveys his empire from below the heavens, his stony eyes piercing every mapper who dare look up at him.
Who is this mighty mortal?
Who could have such vision as to be granted a statue?
Who is so loved that his beauty will be captured forever?
Get down on your knees and worship him, for this is GLOOMP.
P.S. He's running for President, so voting for him would be cool, thanks.

in all honesty, i'm liking the comments more than the map, but those tiles are still very well done.

I was pointing towards my own maps as I couldn't be arsed to find someone else as an example
If a map of mine gets featured I'll delist it.

"AMLT hasn't made a good map since 2007."
Lol. Lie.
Bollocks! You're the one who keeps pointing towards your maps, your rating average, your renown. Give it a rest already.

Well.
This site sucks a lot from time to time.
When I have the most episodes - cucumber_boy has 123-3 - I have reached my target. There will be nothing more which holds me here.
I agree with the feature crap.

AMLT
your rating average here honestly has virtually /nothing/ to do with how good you are.

Continuing...
There are a lot of maps submitted with completely original concepts that just get ignored. There are also quite a lot of maps (like this [nmaps.net]) of mine which have (in this case) 18 votes with an average of 5/5 - yet most of the features I see here start off with an average of around 3 (and in most cases end up lower by the time the map is off the front page).
There are some really good maps featured which I do really enjoy playing, however often things like this happen where a reviewer features one of their friend's maps as (no doubt in some cases) they're too lazy to find anything else to write about.

@Ferox
but the forums already do that, so it would be unnecessary, as I already said in that paragraph you posted :P

It's not just one day, is it.

Aphex_N, I never said PALEMOON did do that. I was purely implying that if he did someone would no doubt jump to feature a map of his.
"if you look at peoples profiles you'll be amazed at how many place PALEMOON as one of their top authors"
If your maps were shown on the front page of NUMA as often as his, I'm pretty sure you'd be listed as many people's top authors as well.
I used to be in many people's top authors lists until my profile stopped working - now most newcommers hardly know who I am.
Now, as I said before, I really don't care if my maps get featured or not. I'm simply bringing this all up as this kind of feature (from my point of view) shows a large divide in NUMA.
Reiterating my points:
1. If asami [nmaps.net] had made this map, it probably would've been off the Hot Maps page in under an hour, let alone featured.
2. If mahi_mahi [nmaps.net] had made this map about, lets say, BluePretzel [nmaps.net], it wouldn't have been featured.
3. If this was a different map featured, there would've been heavy complaints towards ChrisE for featuring a map so fast.
4. Gloomp isn't the only person here who has a birthday from time to time.

Ha.
Funny, all this controversy and I haven't said a thing to fuel it. I must be losing my touch.
I think the map looks like gloomp in an 8-bit retro kind of way.

in order to prevent future controversy like this, why not just post important and/or popular community members birthdays as news messages on the home page? Now, that may sound like the same thing that the forums do, but it's not, because this way someone could write a birthday message like Chris has done here, provide a link to one of their maps or some birthday map made for them like this one where people can celebrate it with thousands of comments and rate it with thousands of 5's and the other usual stuff, etc., etc., but those maps just don't get featured and no one can complain about a waste of a feature or rain on your parade in some other manner. I mean, wasn't that already done for Yahoozy's birthday or someone else? Now, I assume only admins can post on the front page, but I don't see how that would cause any real problems...
Why not have an application at the bottom of the page to see whose birthday is today? It should be pretty easy to do.

I hate it...
...when maps get featured in under 24 hours.
Some people don't have a sense of humour. Happy birthday yesterday gloomp!

@AMLT
having chilled with PALEMOON on channel#moa for most of my time in this community I have never heard PALEMOON /ever/ whine about 'not getting featured in three weeks' or anything similar- he is never 'behind the scenes' in his feautres (except for maybe that southpaw one :P) and is always grateful for features.
There are two causes for his for his large amount of features.
1) is that he consistently makes good maps (which is /subjective/, but if you look at peoples profiles you'll be amazed at how many place PALEMOON as one of their top authors).
2) his popularity in the community does factor into his amount of features. However, unlike many here seem to think, this does not mean he sits in irc plotting methods of luring an innocent reviewer into his fiendish trap of featuring another of his maps. His popularity simply means many people play his maps; this means, logically, reviewers will often stumble across his maps, combined with the quality this means they get featured. He does not click his fingers every time he wants a review.
You could argue that this map (or a previous PALEMOON feature) is not good. But it's subjective, and it just so happens to be many people here like his maps (as I mentioned previously PALEMOON appears in a huge amount of people's 'favourite authors' section).
What this seems to come down to is that people with little/no features who believe they have (and probably do) a great mapping skill are annoyed something /they/ don't like got featured. Do I have to say subjective in italics again?

I didn't mean to offend you.
"Famous authors get famous by making good maps, and then these maps get featured."
This is only half true. I don't really care that much for featured maps, so try not to view this as me being selfish in any way: I have a higher average rating than most mappers who get features. My average rating is probably on par with PALEMOON's - maybe a little lower; however the truth is that he has 17 featured maps and I only have 3.
The peak of your ratings is around 3.8-3.9 (I'm talking about Gloomp here) - mine on the other hand is around 4.4-4.5.
When you consider me as an example here, it becomes quite apparent that what the majority think of your maps hardly reflects what maps get reviewed.
On IRC, if PALEMOON was to randomly say "aw I haven't had a featured map in 3 weeks" I'm pretty sure someone would jump to feature one of his maps. I'm pretty sure if you did the same, a similar thing would happen.
Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate that you're a group of friends and whatnot, but it quite often makes outsiders get ignored and cast aside.

"also i can see people having fits because birthdays would stay up on the homepage forever"
I can see that, too, I just figured getting rid of the feature would create one less thing to fuss about and one less place to do it in.
"...and since there is no archive for them currently..."
Ah, I didn't think about that, nevermind... :/ Originally I just figured people could scroll down and that there aren't that many news posts and birthdays worth posting in the first place, but yeah, guess that wouldn't work.

Fair enough palemoon,
I don't know what gloomp looks like, so I can't really pictify his face. I'll try to make a birthday map tomorrow, because I really should sleep now (work tomorrow). It's a little lame a day late but what are you gonna do. You want me to link it here or no?
They are my friends, not my subjects.

I may eqarn some flack for this,
but I believe many people, myself possibly included, could make a decent representation of a face that would rival the one featured here.
The hair is a bit of a mess of tiles, it looks pretty good but could be much better.

mkay..
this is my statement:
i see the only people defending gloomp are the ones who would jump off a cliff if gloomp said it on irc. also, the review kinda ticked me off; it made you sound like some slobbering nerd fan-boy. gloomp is a user just like us, he's not some king (no offense champ).
on the other hand, gloomp is a nice, funny person who should be respected (it is his birthday you know). however, i don't think this is the best way to recognize this feat.
sorry if i came off as some kind of moron.
