Try using a variety of tiles to create flow

Make sure the ninja doesn't halt suddenly at any point, or even better don't allow the player to slow down at all. Enemies can enhance a race but make sure that they don't kill the player unless they make a mistake. Visual presentation is very important, but make sure it does not block or obscure the flow in any way. If you have to decide between good flow or good looks, choose flow.
