The best linear maps don't feel linear at all. Many of the winning entries into gloomp's acclaimed contest, the Linear Map Competition, show this.
Riobe's "Reached An Impass" is definitely one of the best examples.
A massive, sprawling minefield captivates most of the map, inhabited only by a nasty chaingun and a few rouge floorguards. The ninja must jump along the twisted wreckage pulled in by the junkyard of a minefield, collecting gold and dodging the consistent hail of bullets from the persistent chaingun.
It's surprising how effective a single enemy can be.

Went into this feeling like the game-play was going to rush you. And it didn't, it played really well. Great map, good feature. favorite.

skyray's feature was up for... what.. 20 minutes?
Which is sick, really.

GTM:
I think he means that the atmosphere of some linear maps screws with your brain and makes them feel more freeform, when they are open-looking like this one.

Woo, Riobe!
The best thing about this map is it's memorable, which says something for a Riobe map.

I liked the sensation
the one-ways gave to the map, as well I liked the well placed bounceblocks as they gave some free movement when you needed it, yet the chaingun enforced you to keep on moving.

Hmm.
Even though you could complete it going up to the left (before the editing) it isn't nearly as fun, and the AGD would be a big pain because you'd have to go back the way you came. I think everyone knew that they were supposed to go right, at least it seemed obvious to me.

Much Faster
I think this one better demonstrates why this isn't linear, as it's faster than esay's demo on nreality where he goes right.

Seneschal, have you even played this?
It's impossible to get a completion by going up due to the trapdoor.

Sub-1000 AGD
This was a very fun level, although I was expecting it to be much harder than it really was. I beat it right away, but it took a few minutes to get a sub-1000. However, I thought the map had a really nice flow and concept, and I liked the aesthetics of it. I hope you win whatever contest you are in with this map. 5aved.
