Too many people have considered the city's allegory to be a soulless beast--a wanton and wicked uncaring thing, devoid of personality and life. I find that common symbol to be false. The city is a living, breathing creature--yes--but it's a creature of hope and passion and progress. It's just like you and I. Sometimes it gives; sometimes it takes. It just yearns to be wanted and accepted. Maybe we could look past its flaws to see its human nature. The city has the personality of an overprotective mother. Its actions may seem harsh or unfair at times, but its really just there to nurture us and take care of us when we can't manage on our own. There's nothing about the city that would make it "soulless". If anything, the city has a richer soul than the sum of its inhabitants. I feel safe within the city. |
