its darker because you get the solid black center of the mines more than if you used no snap. I used your type of art and no snap to make this picture.

The beard was originally just made with no snap on, but the ammount of mines on the level was making the map lag terribly when i was making it, and i was also having trouble submitting it on here because it was a lot of data. So a way of reducing the ammount of mine in the map was by placing the mines in the beard and hair in a 1/4 snap grid, as it would still have the same solid colour look, but use the minimum number of mines possible. ^_^

but, the one thing that bothered me (I mean, the nose looks fine, wtf), but the part on the chin... the beard looks great and then all of a sudden it's too grid like. oh well. don't think i'm saying anything bad really, just something I noticed...
