Rather than create these tiny spaces with enemies tucked into walls

why not open up the tunnels a little bit and put enemies near the center? It creates more range for the enemy, more freedom for the player, it looks nicer, and it's similar to this map you want to create but on a bigger scale. Win-win-win-win.
