I can't find a satisfying path; everywhere I go I run straight into something nasty. The timing of everything feels odd, mostly having to wait a little longer than is comfortable. Makes the maps feel very stilted.

One piece of instant good advice would be this: you don't need four doors to stop drone from moving.
Just take the drone code (in this instance, laser): 6^420,228,4,0,1,2
And remove the last digit and replace it with the letters 'NaN', like so:
6^420,228,4,0,1,NaN
Reload the level and the drone will remain where you placed it.
